The Greek Kitchen has been around a few years, based on Ravendale Street in Scunthorpe but strangely enough I’ve booked to go a few times over the years and not had much luck, either with it being fully booked or my booking lost but ultimately it seems it’s never short of customers which is great news and shows they are definitely doing a lot of things right!
I wasn’t planning on reviewing my visit because to be honest, reviewing takes more work than you’d think and by the time you’ve finished photographing and videoing the food in every angle possible and trying to remember all the ingredients and tastes, it sometimes takes away from the experience of just sitting down and having a nice meal out, so excuse the fact the photos are slightly rubbish but I just can’t help myself when it comes to promoting local, so I’ve had to review it.
So, I was just out being treated to lunch for my birthday and as I searched and scrolled for somewhere I haven’t been, I came across the fantastic offer of small plates between 1pm and 3pm. My partner did a bit of a last minute booking a few hours before we arrived, but again, it had been missed off even though it was confirmed, luckily they had 1 spare table and it seemed most people were finishing up. Like I said, it is a very busy restaurant and the staff are working constantly so I get bookings can probably get a little crazy.
Anyway besides those booking mishaps, we were seated, we already knew we fancied the small plates and we were slightly over optimistic about the amount we could eat but we wanted to try as much as we could and when it’s £15.50 for 6 small plates it’s very good value, even much better than one of the huge chains in town.
I don’t know about you but I just love the variety of small plates and picking at the different dishes. So what did we go for, we did opt for 6 each and extra dips for good measure.
- BBQ Wings
- Meatballs in sauce
- Honey & Sesame Parcels
- Spit Pork
- Calamari
- Mixes Croquettes
- Village Sausage
- Fried Cheese
- Dolmades
- 2x Greek salads
- Chips
Now I will say, every dish was fresh and hot and as the small plates filled up our table my small lunch time appetite grew and I was dipping into every dish. It turns into a bit of a quiz really doesn’t it, “which ones your favourite?” and then you try something else and change your mind.
The balance of mixing the flavours and textures works so well, because you have the richness of the meatball marinara sauce and thick bbq sauce coating the chicken wings and the crunch of your chips and calamari, the freshness and tang of your Greek salad with the feta and the sweet and delicate flavour of the honey parcels and Dolmades.

It’s hard to pick which dish was ultimately the best because they all had their own unique qualities but if I had to pick, i’d say the spit pork just takes it for me with it’s rich flavour, good seasoning and just moreish, even when I was absolutely full, I could not stop picking at that. And strangely something I wouldn’t expect to be my favourite, a mixed croquette, it was soft and coated in breadcrumbs and I can’t even really tell you what was in it but what I can say is the dill came through that potato and it was just delightful, a really nice flavour. This restaurant knows how to season it’s food.
You even get some pitta pieces on the table so you can load them up with sauce and different dishes. The meatballs were tender and the marinara was flavoured with the juice from the meat.
Every dish was good so I find it had to pick just one, probably the only one I didn’t like too much was the BBQ wings and that was simply because the sauce was just a bit too much for me after the first 2 wings and quite overpowering, the actual chicken wings themselves were tasty with crisp skin.
So will I be back? I hope so, if I can get a table for sure! I often go to town on a weekend and eat at the Market food court but this really is a good value offer when you just want to pop in for food midday.
It’s a small restaurant and I think this works in their favour for creating a bigger atmosphere. I’m sure you probably do already but if you don’t, give them a follow and keep an eye out for their Greek Nights if you really want a party with your meal. They regularly have live music, plate smashing and dancing in the street, the next one’s July 11th and to be honest I’ve never heard a bad word about the restaurant, only good things, so if you haven’t been, get booked in.
As you can see by the small plates menu, it has a great vegetarian selection and obviously there is the main menu too, which is what most other people in the restaurant seemed to be ordering.
