This weekend we tried out a brand new camp site, Everwild Camping. It only opened 4 weeks ago. It’s about 14 miles away depending on which route you take from Scunthorpe (25-30 minute drive). It is quite hidden and easy to miss from the roadside but before your stay you’ll get a co-ordinates link for google maps which will take you down the right track.
Located in Gunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. Close to Epworth and Owston Ferry.
This camp site is probably as wild as you can get without pitching up a tent in some random woods for the night, which believe me as teens we were always in Kingsway. But it’s not generally acceptable to just pitch up in any woods you like, particularly nature reserves so Everwild is a great option if you want an experience that comes close.
Upon arrival you’ll go down a rocky track beside a field until you reach the Everwild sign on the gate, here you will find a small carpark. You are greeted by one of the friendly owners and shown to your pitch for the night. They even have wheelbarrows and camping trolleys to help you get your supplies to the pitch.
We opted for the woodland pitches, which are slightly more expensive than the grass, but we think well worth the extra. The nice thing here is they don’t pack the tents in for maximum profit. Each allocated pitch has plenty of space.
The woodland pitches are beautiful and the smell of alpine fills the air, the canopy of trees above gave much needed shade whilst pitching up as the sunlight seeps through the leaves making them glow and the mottled shadows cast from the sun peeking through on to the woodland floor beneath your feet.
We are generally a little anti social and enjoy the solitude, but on this occasion we went to be social, taking up 2 pitches with family and friends. Pitches 8 and 9 were perfect for this, it meant we could be close by and feel like we had our own area of the woods to setup home for the night, it’s easy to forget other people are camping close by and you need to be more observant than we were of when everyone else’s lights were out, most other campers had retired to the tent by 10pm. But I suppose this would depend on the people staying that particular weekend.
Some weekends the clearing close to the entrance is used as an evening communal fire and socialising space but it’s also a great place for the kids, it’s got rope swing, pedal carts, big tractor tyres, swing ball and open space to run and play, as well as some hammocks.
Now, we all know, fire and this very dry, hot weather we’ve been having is a worry, but the camp owners ensured the fire pits were raised and the ground around was cleared of debris, steps away was a bucket filled with sand and we had plenty of water with us too. As long as you are sensible and responsible it’s absolutely fine and we thoroughly enjoyed a night time camp fire and a morning one too! We also got the BBQ out on a raised platform. If you are worried about other people and their fires, then it’s fine, because the site owners pop by and check everything is alright.
This place is amazing for kids, it’s very safe and secure and they can go off to explore, just warn them to keep away from the banks of the lake. The kids had great fun collecting sticks for the fire and keeping it going, den building and climbing the trees.
It’s worth noting this is closer to wild camping and it’s certainly not glamping. Your main luxury is the nature surrounding you and 3 portaloos. There is no electricity or running water so it’s worth taking a few bottles and a battery pack.
There is a small honesty hut, you can pay via QR code or cash to one of the people in the owners camp near the entrance. Most things are reasonably priced but our daughter couldn’t stop buying bags of marshmallows for £3 a pop. If it gets too dark or you just can’t be bothered to find wood from the floor, you can purchase chopped logs for £7.
Overall, it was a great stay, thoroughly enjoyable, safe, friendly and beautiful surroundings. We can’t wait to go back again for a couples night away.
It would be great to see some organised festival style events held here in future. There may also be some bushcraft workshops coming up so check their socials.
