Food Review // Honest Lawyer Scunthorpe

Tonight we visited the Honest Lawyer on Oswald Road.

They have recently changed management and reopened the restaurant. They currently have a special deal £10.95 for a starter and main. This deal can also include the mixed grill for an extra £3 or the steak and gammon dishes for an extra £2.

We walked in to a warm and friendly welcome from the young man behind the bar and ordered our drinks to take upstairs to the restaurant. We were seated on the round table next to the large front curved window.

The seats were comfortable and the lighting was warm and mellow. To add to the experience there were indie classics like Cast and The Enemy playing lightly through the speakers. It’s personal preference, but I much prefer a bit of music in a restaurant while I eat rather than a silent background.

The menus are presented on simple wooden clipboard and it makes it a lot easier to read and pick your meal. Some menus are like opening a world map.

Our orders for the starters and mains were taken by another lovely polite young man.

There were plenty of options to choose from and all the starters sounded amazing. If we could have managed it we would have tried them all. But maybe next time.

For the starter I went for the breaded butterfly king prawns served with salad. I do love my seafood and I can honestly say these were some of the tastiest breaded king prawns I’ve had. The texture of the prawn coating was light and crunchy and the prawns were beautifully cooked, tender and juicy. The sweet chilli sauce was also a great addition, it had a bit of a kick to it.

My partner opted for the Breaded garlic mushrooms, which were piping hot and full of flavour. Sometimes with breaded mushrooms they can be quite tasteless and watery but these definitely were not! Perfectly crunchy coating with succulent morish mushrooms inside.

For our mains we both liked the sound of the mixed grill, which came with a tender rump steak cooked just as we asked. One steak was well done but not chewy or dry and the other was medium rare as requested. There was also a thick piece of gammon steak, which was melt in the mouth. The Lincolnshire sausage was very tasty and you could tell it was good quality meat. The pork and lamb cutlets were also rather large so it was a lot of meat for your money. If all that wasn’t enough (which it was) you also got a side of hand cut chips, half a grilled tomato, a pineapple ring, a nice runny egg ,broccoli and sweet sliced carrots.

For dessert, my partner opted for the chocolate fudge cake. I couldn’t manage a dessert and when I saw the size of the deep bowl they brought to the table, I was glad I hadn’t tried to squeeze one in. The portion size was huge! The cake was light and fluffy and was nicely complimented by two scoops of refreshing vanilla ice cream to compliment.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and experience at the Honest Lawyer and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. We will hopefully be returning again soon to try out the Sunday Special that was featured on the specials blackboard so we will let you know how that is when we do.

We would recommend giving it a go next time you are deciding where to eat out in the area.

You can book via their Facebook page or call them on 01724 276652. It’s not imperative to book but it is advised.
