Consultation to transform Kingsway Golf, Crth Lincolnshire Council would like to know your views on the creation of a new Local Nature Reserve at Kingsway Golf Course in Scunthorpe. Known as Kingsway Local Nature Reserve, the site would be an inspiring wild area in the heart of Scunthorpe.

The number of rounds of golf played at the course has fallen significantly in recent years, from 24,000 rounds in 2004, to 5,000 in 2015. The opportunity now exists to turn the course into a Local Nature Reserve to retain it as a community asset available for the enjoyment of all local residents.

There are currently 13 Local Nature Reserves in North Lincolnshire, with another four planned for the future, including Kingsway.

Our vision is for a wild area in the heart of Scunthorpe that is truly inspiring. Our aims are:

  • To protect existing wildlife habitats and create opportunities for more wildlife to use them
  • To involve local people in the active running of the site
  • To create a learning environment where schools can undertake educational work in an open air classroom
  • To create a green space where people can walk, cycle and enjoy physical exercise whilst exploring nature on the doorstep.

We are inviting people to attend a consultation event on Wednesday 9 August, in the Kingsway Golf Course car park, between 1pm and 7pm. You will be asked about what you think to our proposals, how you currently use the site, any ideas you have for the site, your memories of the area, and if you would like to be involved with running the new nature reserve.

If you are unable to attend the consultation event, you can also have your say by visiting our current consultations page.

Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Rob Waltham, said:
“Local Nature Reserves are wonderful, wild areas for local people to enjoy some peace and tranquillity away from their busy, everyday lives. What better way to keep the Kingsway Golf Course site as a community asset for North Lincolnshire.
“We are committed to our ambitious but exciting target of creating two hectares of Local Nature Reserve for every 1,000 residents in North Lincolnshire. It will create a natural haven of wildlife for visitors to enjoy.
“To have your say, come along to the consultation on Wednesday 9 August or visit our website.”
