I had seen the recent news about the reopening of previously named venue (Showboat/Storm/Void) whichever name you remember it by and thought I’d look into it. It didn’t take too long until I came across some bright street art images “Bar Retro”. This immediately caught my eye as I spend quite a lot of time down the trendy graffiti filled Humber street in Hull.
I thought I would find out a little more about the new venue; as in my opinion any re opening in our towns declining nightlife is great news. I asked the new owners a few questions about their new venture and it all sounds pretty good to me. I hope people give it a chance and check it out, as I certainly will be.
So what did the new owners have to say:
First off when I heard the name RETRO I imagined something like the old nightspot Bamboogey next door. But I can see from your recent posts, you are mixing it up and have some modern street art style to the place.
How long have you had to give the place a new look and what can people expect?
“We purchased the venue about 4 months ago and in this time we have done some major renovations. We have taken inspiration from the 80’s 90’s and 00’s in the interior but with a modern twist. We have had a local graffiti artist as well as other designers working on this and it’s going to be something different from what Scunthorpe has seen before! “
How will RETRO stand out from the other venues in the town?
“There’s a few things that make us a little different from other venues in the area, the music, open layout of the bar and dance floor. We also have a VIP area available if you’re celebrating a special occasion! There are other seating areas all with their own little quirks, making for lots of interesting photo opportunities. We are going to have some vintage arcade games to help customers get into the retro mood!”
Will it be a big change from it’s previous revamps and name changes?
“The music will be retro as the name suggests focusing on 80’s though 00’s party and classic anthems, we have chosen this as we would like to attract a slightly older crowd, but a fun and energetic vibe, because of this we will be enforcing a 21 years and over door policy!”
What sort of drinks selection can your customers expect?
“As for drinks we will be offering a more premium selection then the previous bars at this venue. We have beers such as San Miguel and Moretti on tap and have a wide selection of sprits and of course a good gin selection, not forgetting the wine and fizz. We will have a range of classic cocktails but also ‘Retro’ signature cocktails with nostalgic names and modern tastes!”
Opening times & Launch date:
“We will be opening the venue 10pm till 4am Thursday through Sunday with last entry at 2.30am. Opening on Friday 6th September! The venue will also be available for private hire and would make the perfect party venue holding up to 300 people! “
Sounds worth giving a go! So don’t forget it opens Friday 6th September and we might see you there!
I always believe venues should be given another chance especially when people have taken the time to invest, improve and try to create something new, some places seem to retain a stigma around them from previous years. My advice is rather than complain about the lack of choices in Scunthorpe, support the ones we do have, otherwise you may end up with even less.
Let’s hope with the addition of Retro, the massive expansion and revamp of the Bluebell and the existing bars left in town, Scunthorpe can again see some Life in it’s declining nightlife.
