Review // Soul Destination @ Redbourn Club

Last Saturday, I was asked to Redbourn Club to review the show. I use the term show because there were three acts appearing that night.

The entertainment had actually been organised by the lead singer of one of the acts, “Soul Destination”, Martin Thomas. He was first on stage, covering the duties of compere along with performing a number of soul and motown songs. He did a tremendous job of warming the audience up, stomping up and down the stage as he delivered his songs. The room was full and the dancefloor was occuppied right from the start.

Soul Destination are a 7 piece band. It would appear that Soul Destination are already building up quite a following. After doing such an excellent job of entertaining the audience.

Martin introduced the audience to “Suki-Soul” who continued our Soul and Motown journey with songs from female soul and motown divas, The Ronnettes, Aretha Franklin and a number of other hits. Suki was also a very energetic performer who joined the dancers on the floor whilst still managing to sing. Towards the end of Suki’s spot, the room began to fill up ready for the main act of the evening Soul Destination.

When Soul Destination took to the stage the audience were introduced to the expansive sound of a soul band very much like the well known Rumble Band. The very attentive audience were treated to the final delights of our Motown/ Soul extravaganza with a number of soul classics, which included Mustang Sally, in which the band managed to obtain vocal assistance from the audience.
The evening was a brilliant way of showcasing the talents of the band in a unique way. The format was reminiscent of North East Clubs in the fifties and sixties, who used to book a showcase rather than an artist. To those followers of Soul and Motown performed by a band I recommend that you should go and see Soul Destination and should any club want an excellent Soul Band then they should be booking this band.
