Food Review: El Fervvo in Scunthorpe

El Fervvo is relatively new in town, hidden down Gilliatt Street in Scunthorpe, don’t be fooled by the logo, it’s much more than just burgers. On the menu you can expect to find calamari, fried prawns, sweet chilli chicken and rice, steak, dirty dogs, loaded chips and halloumi and falafel wraps, just to name a few.

It’s quite a large space inside, with plenty of tables and booth seating. The kitchen is open at the counter so you can see the food being made and smell the aromas coming from the grill.

It was a Sunday afternoon, and we fancied an impromptu visit. I’ve seen the burgers online, so I did have to try one of these, but I reckon I’ll be back for some prawns and calamari at some point.

We went for the Double bacon cheeseburger, the Sweet Chilli Chicken and Rice and the Falafel and halloumi wrap.

The wrap was quite big and packed with fresh salad, homemade chips, strips of grilled halloumi and bits of fried falafel and sauce, all wrapped in a very light and soft Lebanese style flatbread.

The double bacon cheeseburger was made with good quality beef mince and had that crisp outer edge but juicy and tender inside. It had a good ratio of salad and sauce, I just can’t stand a burger without salad but that’s my personal preference. It had ripe and sweet tomato and the crunch of fresh red onion and lettuce to cut through the richness of the meat and melted cheese and the thick slice of crisp bacon. The bun was lightly toasted and soft and all round it was a very good burger. Good balance of flavours and very tasty.

I added some of the restaurants signature Parmesan and garlic chips to my order, sometimes with these it’s just some frozen chips with a bit of parm chucked on top but not at El Fervvo, here you get fresh skin on chips prepared in house, which takes more time than you’d think, high grade potatoes are bought in by the bag load, chipped in house, soaked over night and cooked to perfection for that deeper flavour, bite and soft centre, the garlic and Parmesan both came through with eat mouthful and the added garlic sauce on the side just gave it that extra kick.

The Sweet Chilli Chicken, I can’t decide if this or the burger was my favourite, the rice was just so soft and fluffy with a sort of coconut hint and a moreish flavour. You’d think rice would be quite easy to get right, it’s not. Some places have some awful tasteless rice that’s overcooked. So alongside the rice was some more salad, iceberg lettuce and red onion topped with a generous helping of sweet chilli chicken, the chicken had a very light batter, just enough to hold that sauce and give a little crisp to the outside and the meat was succulent, all topped off with a good sprinkle of sesame seeds. The light batter made this dish that little bit different, in a good way.

For dessert, I think there are some other options but the one staring us in the face was the Italian gelato section on the counter. You can opt for a waffle cone or a tub but there’s some tasty flavours on offer, we tried the honeycomb, chocolate brownie, coconut and the mango. There’s plenty of toppings to add on too and it’s a reasonable price at £2.50 a scoop. So it will be perfect if your in town on a hot day and fancy a cool down with a soft gelato.

So, all in all, it was a decent meal. The restaurant is very clean and I like the music, it was a little louder than background noise and it was quite a vibe while you waited for your food. My only pointer on the food would be the falafel needs a bit more seasoning and flavour to make it stand out in the wrap but other than that, all good! The Sweet Chilli Chicken, the Parmesan and garlic chips and the double burger were all winners with us.

So go visit El Fervvo next time your shopping in town and let me know what you think.
