Food Review // Neapolitan Cuisine at Trattoria Caputo in Scunthorpe

Trattoria Caputo by Rita is a new true Neapolitan family restaurant in Scunthorpe town centre.

Nestled quietly on Dunstall Street away from the main High Street, warm lighting and earthy tones invite you in from the street.

There was already a few people seated with food arriving at their tables and due to a large party booking upstairs the evening menu was being served rather than the Lunch menu so I’m still keen to return and try something from the lunch menu.

We picked a table and took a seat and were handed our menus. We took a while to browse the menu but finally decided upon the Orecchiette alla Nerano, which translated; is a type of pasta with provolone cheese, courgette, Parmesan, basil, garlic and extra virgin olive oil.

The Napoli Pizza came with juicy fresh green olives, anchovies, fresh mozzarella, capers, garlic and of course we ordered a Cheese garlic bread.

You’d expect the Napoli pizza to be quite salty with the anchovies and capers but it really wasn’t, all the flavours complimented each other and the taste was very balanced. The olives were huge and having Italian origins in my family, I seem to have a real love for the sharp tang of a green olive, which I understand is not for everyone, but there are a lot of different pizza options to choose from. Both the pizza and garlic bread were very fresh, thin and soft yet crunchy, with an authentic taste to the dough and as much as I may try I can’t get these results at home without a pizza oven so if you want a good pizza, try Rita’s.

The pasta was creamy and moreish. It comes in a large dish, so a generous portion size and cooked homemade with love. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the courgette topper added that variation of taste and texture to the dish.

The restaurant itself is intimate and cosy venue with space for larger parties upstairs. It’s a great place for couples or a meal out with friends and family. The venue is currently awaiting it’s alcohol license but it shouldn’t be long now, give it a week or two.

The owner Rita is lovely, very welcoming and friendly. She really cares when she asks if you’ve enjoyed your food, rather than the obligatory checks at a chain restaurant or pub. She really takes pride in the food she is cooking and serving to her customers.

So please give it a try and support small local businesses like this and more importantly, don’t forget to review it on Tripadvisor or Facebook, so other people can try it too.

It was pretty busy for lunch time when we first arrived so best to book in advance.

Obviously, I can’t fulfil every request as I’m only one woman, but I’ll try my best!
