A Saturday night and we decided to pop out for a meal, we didn’t book and thought we’d chance it a bit last minute but the Imperial Mahal on Doncaster road were very accommodating.
The venue was for years previously named “The Imperial” Serving up predominantly Chinese cuisine. But since it’s refurbishment and change of ownership it now serves indo cuisine (Indian) dishes.
It’s a nice atmosphere and in comparison to some of the other Indian restaurants in town it offers spacious dining. It’s quite a large venue and the tables are nicely spread out so you don’t feel like you’re having a date with the strangers next to you, some people might like that, depends what you’re into lol but for us this was a plus.
We were seated and soon had our drinks, we went for the obligatory poppadoms and chutney selection. The Imperial Mahal offers 3 types of poppadoms and I must recommend the (spiced) ones. They aren’t spicy but they are tasty, crisp and have an almost bubbled texture.

We skipped the starters on this occasion and went straight for the mains with a delightful bowl of mushroom Bhaji, a house special curry “Nawabi” which is by far one of my favourites, it’s a rich bhuna style sauce that you can have medium or hot and it’s cooked with flavourful lamb mince. Not only that it has beautifully tender and melt in the mouth chicken pieces throughout. As you eat the curry you get meaty chunks of mince along with a tiny hint of spice, very moreish.

We also got the vegetable Dansak curry, which was packed with green peppers, potatoes, peas, tomato and onion with sweet and sour notes and a little spice.

The rice, you can pick ANY combination of rice for the same price so add what you like to it. Whether it’s keema or coconut, we went for Garlic and coriander, which was very flavourful. The Naan bread was beautifully light and crisp but with a soft dough texture too, it was very good! Not too heavy at all.

All in all, service was quick and friendly, the venue was pleasant and comfortable and the food was top notch. Price was reasonable with the special house dishes costing around £12.90 and your popular curry like balti, korma etc coming in at £10.90 depending on your choice of meat. And if like us you can’t manage it all they will quite happily bag it up for you to take home.
