Food Review // Pritams Tandoori Grill

Just a note, if you are thinking of booking the restaurant is having a break after the There are some great independent places to eat in and around Scunthorpe, believe it or not and we were looking for somewhere we hadn’t tried yet for a New Year’s Day treat.

Pritams is situated inside the same building as Harry’s Bar in Ashby. There’s a small car park and the restaurant can be accessed through it’s own doors and entrance or through Harry’s bar. The restaurant is cosy, warm and welcoming with clean and modern decor. Maybe strange to mention but I like that they don’t have the table cloths, because I just always hate to stain it right from the start. And our server even wiped it after clearing away the first set of plates.

Pritams is a family run restaurant specialising in North Indian Punjabi flavour. The restaurant is named after their grandfather who introduced them to the world of different Punjabi flavours.

From sizzling mixed grills, to their unique Okra fries and traditional Punjabi butter chicken. Pritams is offering a modern twist on your traditional curry house restaurant and if you don’t like curry, no problem! There’s also unique wraps, loaded dirty chips and burgers on the menu.

We were greeted by our friendly server and offered to select any available table we liked. It was New Years Day so it was quieter than usual I expect. We were handed a drinks and food menu. The drinks were all reasonably priced with a coke coming in at just £1.70! Which is usually going to set you back about £3 elsewhere.

Our server politely lit a candle on the centre of our table and took our drinks order as we eagerly browsed the tasty menu. The menu layout was easy to read and not too overwhelming.

With it being our first visit we weren’t sure on portion size so naturally we got a little over excited and over ordered.

We didn’t order curry but we couldn’t help but order some poppadoms and a pickle tray (standard) and we were so glad we did! It set the bar for the evening. The pickle selection was top notch, one consisted of some sort of fine and sweet desiccated coconut with a hint of spice, you better believe we were piling that with our teaspoons onto the crisp pieces of poppadom.

Once we devoured that we’d asked for everything else we ordered to come out at the same time, rather than starters and mains.

We went for the Dirty chips, which were crunchy and crisp with a soft an fluffy centre and added chip spice, which is always good in my opinion. They were topped with cheese, jalapenos and Keema mince. More than enough for 2 or even 3 people to share.

Next up on our order was Mushroom Bhaji, and if you’ve never ordered this and love mushrooms and curry, then you need to try it. Perfectly sauced and spiced coated and tender mushrooms and they weren’t tight on the portion size either!

Mushroom Bhaji

We also ordered a side of mushroom rice, very nice by the way but the star of the show was our 2 mains. The Paneer and Onion Bhaji naan wrap and my single mixed grill for one. My mixed grill came out on a sizzler and the smell was incredible, as well as the presentation, I couldn’t believe it was only £7.50 and it had a tender marinated lamb chop, 2 fish Pakoras, 2 Sheekh kebabs, succulent pieces of chicken Tikka, 2 crispy coated chicken wings on a bed of sweet onions with some pink pickled ones thrown into the mix, delicious and all cooked perfectly.

The naan wrap was a monster! A huge fluffy and light hand prepared naan filled to the brim with thick cut paneer and crispy onion bhaji. This was only £7 and for the size, definitely worth it.

We can’t wait to go back and try some of the delicious curries, we just couldn’t manage any and wanted to try some of the less obvious menu items, the ones you probably wouldn’t expect at the curry restaurant. You can also get naan pizza, which sounds good to me! The menu states that all Curries are gluten free too so no need to miss out. Our meal with drinks came in under £35 and you can’t say fairer than that for the quality, taste and amount of food.

Highly recommend for a date night or meal with friends and family, you won’t be disappointed.
