The Plowright Theatre | 12 – 14 January 2023
Thursday 12th January was opening night for local theatre group, “Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club” with their take on the the panto Frankenstein by David Swan. It was my first time attending one of this groups performances and with the title of the play, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was definitely Frankenstein with a twist. One of the main characters is a young man called Frankie “Frank.N. Stein”. But I won’t give too much away about the plot or what happens. What I will say is it’s a great family friendly pantomime and the kids will love it!

It’s got all the expected panto lines for the audience participation and people of all ages were joining in. The opening night was a really good turn out, which is great to see with this being a smaller production from a local amateur theatre group. It was well supported and everyone really seemed to be getting involved and enjoying it. The title might make you think it would be scary for little kids, but honestly it’s not, they will love booing the vampires and shouting out to the cast.
Everyone in the audience got up to participate in a little song and dance. The cast were very committed to their roles and there were some great personalities coming through from the different characters, we had our favourites and honestly it was a right laugh from start to finish.
So the basic story line is, there’s an Orphan Heidi and she is in danger from a dopey Count Dracula and his gummy Grannie “Granula”. But who can save her? Will it be her faithful dog Kodak, or could it be Prince Ludwig or his valet Buckles, mad Professor Crackpot or maybe Frank N. Stein will be our hero in the end?

Combine these characters with panto dame, Miss Nelly and her band of unruly school girls and you have a recipe for merriment and mayhem with plenty of laughs along the way.
The set design was quite impressive for a small production, with some great artwork painted onto the back scene to portray Dracula’s castle. So if you’re looking for somewhere to take the family this Friday or Saturday evening, get yourselves down to the Plowright Theatre and show your support.
