Hospital Players will raise your Spirits!
Spirit Level, Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th April 2022, 7.30pm at the Plowright Theatre, Scunthorpe
The Hospital Players, Scunthorpe’s oldest amateur dramatics group, are returning to the Plowright Theatre in April for their 226th production.
This time they are performing Spirit Level, a ghostly comedy written by Pam Valentine. Crime writer Jack Cameron and his wife Susie have accidentally drowned and been refused entry to heaven, so they have returned to haunt their country cottage. They pass the time spooking the estate agent and prospective tenants until a special young couple – Simon and Flic – arrive. Jack and Susie become drawn into the new tenants’ lives, and confusion ensues when Marcia, Flic’s monstrous mother, appears on the scene. A call for help becomes necessary but assistance arrives from a most unexpected source!
Melanie Mason is directing the play, having appeared in The Hospital Players’ last show, Just the Ticket, in January. Melanie recalls, “It only took one read through of this play for me to know I wanted to direct it. Spirit Level has everything – a lovely story, wonderful characters, humour and pathos. Plus a few surprises which I’m not going to mention – I’ll leave those for the audience to discover!”
Spirit Level will be the third play The Hospital Players have staged since returning after lockdown, and Melanie is excited to be bringing live theatre to Scunthorpe audiences again: “We can’t wait for audiences to sit back and allow us to ‘raise their spirits’.”
The cast consists of familiar Hospital Players faces Andy Pontin, Joanna Stothard, Graham Wells, Jake West, Sarah Sweetmore and Jan Gregory. They are joined by Anna Pukas who is making her debut for the group playing Marcia, after stints with a drama group in South London and a musical theatre group all the way in Abu Dhabi! Melanie says, “We’ve had great fun in rehearsals and we’re really pleased to welcome Anna to the group and into the cast. We’ve all really enjoyed getting to know her and work with her.”
The Hospital Players will be dedicating their production of Spirit Level to Ann Brown, a much-loved member of the group for over 50 years who sadly passed away in January. “I’m thankful to be directing the play in Ann’s memory,” says Melanie. “She was a dear friend to me, as she was to one and all, and it’s impossible to put into words everything she did or meant to so many people. But she’s been with us all the way through rehearsals and I know she’ll be with us in the theatre.”
The Hospital Players will be collecting donations for Pancreatic Cancer UK in Ann’s memory during play week.
Spirit Level takes place at the Plowright Theatre from Tuesday 26th to Saturday 30th April 2022, 7.30pm. Discounted tickets (2 for £12.75) can be bought below.
