Review // Indie V Britpop at The Wortley Hotel

If you’re looking for a night that combines a decent sit-down meal with the vibrant energy of live entertainment, look no further than the Wortley House Hotel. Their legendary tribute nights are a staple of the local social calendar and their most recent “Indie vs. Britpop” showdown proved exactly why.

From the Manchester-inspired set lists to the melt in the mouth roast beef, here is why you need to get booked in for their next big bash.

The evening began with a relaxed buzz in the bar as guests gathered for pre-show drinks. The organisation was faultless; table numbers were clearly displayed at the door, making the transition into the main concert room seamless and stress-free. Stepping into the main room, the atmosphere was a perfect blend of elegance and party vibes. With crisp white tablecloths, the silver salt and pepper pots and the horseradish sauce on the table, a canopy of fairy lights spanning the ceiling, the room felt special before the first note was even played.

One of the biggest surprises of the Wortley’s tribute nights is the quality and quantity of the food. For £25 per person, you aren’t just getting “Pie and Peas” you’re getting a high-quality, freshly prepared two-course sit-down meal. I opted for the roast beef, which was tender, succulent and served with a Yorkshire pudding. We were even treated to an extra boat of rich, meaty gravy for the table.
My partner’s choice was a butternut squash, brie, beetroot and truffle infused tart. Hearty like a pie but refined in flavour, it held its own against the meat options. With the Trimmings, no one was left hungry. We were served a generous helping of buttery herb new potatoes, giant crisp roasties and a vibrant medley of carrots, green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower.

For pudding it was a choice of mixed berry crumble and custard or elegantly presented Profiteroles.

The service was equally impressive; the staff worked like a well-oiled machine, ensuring every plate arrived hot, fresh and to the right person without a hitch. But they are pros in the sector having done it for so long.

Once the plates were cleared, it was time for the music. The night was a journey through the UK’s most iconic Indie and Britpop tracks.

The first half of the night belonged to the indie kids. All4Indie delivered a tight, energetic set of floor-fillers from the likes of R.E.M., Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths and The Courteeners. It didn’t take long for the dance floor to start beckoning, with plenty of “arms in the air” moments from the crowd.

After a short interval and perhaps a bit of “liquid confidence” from the wine list, Britpop United took to the stage. Sporting signature parkas and dark sunglasses, they brought the 90s back to life. From the swagger of Oasis and The Stone Roses to the pop-sensibilities of Supergrass and James, the energy was high. The dance floor stayed packed until the final chord.

It’s rare to find an evening that caters so well to both foodies and music lovers. The staff at the Wortley are polite, hardworking and clearly take pride in creating a friendly, fun atmosphere.

Where else can you get a 2-course meal and a full night of professional live entertainment for twenty-five quid? It’s not just a tribute night; it’s on of the best value nights out in the area.
