If you’ve spent any time on YouTube in the early Y2K, you’ve likely encountered MC Devvo (Donny Soldier). He is a satirical character created and portrayed by David Firth (the animator behind Salad Fingers) and Christian Webb.
Devvo is a pitch-perfect, albeit exaggerated, parody of a “chav” or “scally” from the mid-2000s, specifically hailing from Doncaster (Donny).
The Legend of the Donny Soldier
Devvo first appeared in the early 2000s through low-quality handheld camera videos. He became a cult icon by blending genuine Northern grit with absurd comedy.
He’s usually seen wearing a Reebok classic or a battered tracksuit, clutching a can of cheap lager and shouting at people passing by. His catchphrases like “Dickhead became playground staples across the UK.
While the videos were funny, the music was surprisingly catchy. He specialised in “Donk” and Scouse House-style tracks with lyrics about dole money, bus rides and getting into trouble.
For a long time, many people actually thought he was a real person. It wasn’t until much later that the wider internet realised he was a comedic creation by the same mind that brought us the eerie world of Salad Fingers.
