The Plowright Theatre | 1 – 4 March 2023
Scunthorpe Musical Theatre Society are preparing to take to The Plowright Theatre Stage for their run of Kipps.
Kipps is based on HG Wells novel, ‘Kipps the story of a simple soul’ which tells the story of Arthur Kipps a poor draper’s apprentice who is literally ‘bumped into’ by Chitterlow an actor who tells him he has inherited a fortune from his estranged Grandfather. The new found wealth propels him into high society where he becomes confused about everything he thought he knew about life. His friends and his childhood sweetheart Ann watch him being manipulated by the classy Helen Walsingham and her conniving mother who wishes to use his money to re-establish her into high society as they have fallen on high times.
This high energy, fast moving and very entertaining family show was adapted from the original ‘Half a Sixpence’ by Stiles and Drew for a Cameron Macintosh production with Charlie Stemp in the lead role.
The show is full of interesting characters and some fabulous musical numbers choreographed by Becky Toward which include ‘Money To Burn’ and ‘Pick out a Simple Tune’ as well as the well-known ‘Half a sixpence’ and ‘Flash Bang Wallop’ from the original show.
With a live band, fabulous costumes from ‘Molly Limpets Emporium’ and a fantastic young cast in the leading roles, Kipps is a must see musical guaranteed to leave you smiling and humming the tunes as you leave the theatre.
“Kipps the musical takes to the stage tomorrow night. As the director my work will be done then but I will watch every night as the fantastic team both backstage and on stage work their socks off to bring this fantastic story to life.”
“Everyone has worked extremely hard to put this production together. It takes a lot of people to bring a show together and this one is huge with more than 20 musical numbers. The staging proved challenging as the action is continuous with all 21 scene changes done as part of the action by the 30 strong company. I am very proud of everyone that has been involved in any way. Please come along and support our hardworking company, they deserve an audience!”
– Jacky Bacon, Director
