Food Review // Take A Gander Burringham

Saturday afternoon and we were looking for a nice place to celebrate a family birthday, we’d seen the Take a Gander in Burringham Lunch menu deal and this tempted us in at £14.95 for 3 courses! Which is outstanding value to say even chain pubs can be charging you £12 just for a burger these days.

Easy booking, I like doing most things online so I just sent them a social media booking and it was as simple as that, you can also call to book.

I don’t recall ever really visiting Take A Gander before but I’m sure I have once in my lifetime, too long ago to remember perhaps. It situated just across from a bank that looks out onto the River Trent. Inside it’s a bit of modern meets old country pub. Beautiful historical features and exposed beams with more modern twist using bright furnishings. It’s got lots of little hidden parts the the pub which we didn’t explore but it’s definitely a lovely place to visit. The dining area is a large exposed brick room with a large open fire place but it feels very cosy and inviting.

There were a few different choices on the set menu and I’ll post it below for anyone interested in visiting. For starters we opted for Crispy Salt and Pepper Squid, which came well presented with a delightful garlic sauce and wedge of lemon, these were lovely. We also had the Halloumi fries which were very well portioned, thick and a nice crispy coating on the outside served with sweet chilli sauce.

Waiting time between courses was very quick, we chose our starters and mains at the same time of ordering.

For our mains, a huge crispy beer battered fish and chips with garden peas, the chips were great! The fish took up most of the plate and was covered in a light fluffy batter with soft flaky fish.

The lasagna, not my favourite of the 3 mains, but it hasn’t put me off returning, it was just quite dry for my taste but other than that the flavour was there and it was well presented with it’s side salad and ciabatta garlic bread.

Lastly it was Homemade pie of the day, which happened to be steak, it was filled with tender pieces of meat and gravy oozing as soon as it was sliced, again nice chips and sweet tasty peas and a good texture on the pastry.

Now we just had room for pudding, we went for the topped brownies and a Chocolate sundae, again the portion sizes were spot on and a very good size for the price of the deal. Anyone sweet tooth would be satisfied with this soft and indulgent chocolate brownie topped with Biscoff crumble and a refreshing scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Sundae was well layered with pieces of chocolate brownie, ice cream and white chocolate sauce to finish.

All in all, with it being a short 5 minute drive, the value for money, the ambience and atmosphere and the overall look and feel of the venue, we will definitely be back to sample more dishes from the menu. The staff were all very nice, polite and helpful and service was very quick.

If you are interested in trying this quaint village pub, it’s situated on the High Street in Burringham.
