Review// Showhawk Duo @ The Wortley Hotel

On Saturday night we had the pleasure of attending the Wortley Hotel on Rowland Road for a popular duo, who have performed prime time on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio One show live and across the festival  & gig circuit. Prior to watching the Duo I had seen good feedback and comments from returning fans. I hadn’t heard of Showhawk before but they are selling out venues across the UK and beyond on their tour.

Firstly a support act from Hull graced the stage called Urban Rain they ran through a setlist of their own songs and threw in a few covers along the way, one being REM. They were a slightly different genre to the main act but nevertheless they were good musicians and the crowd enjoyed singing along.

Soon after Urban Rain left the stage the main act Showhawk Duo got ready to play. The two talented guitarists are named Mikhail Asanovic and Jake Wright and they use their electro acoustic guitars to produce a genre they call ADM which is similar to EDM (electronic dance music) but the sound and well-known songs are composed of just two acoustic guitars with a lot of tuning and slapping the strings and guitar itself to produce a whole new composition and feel.
Showhawk were no doubt, very talented at playing these dance/trance recreations with what they had. The Duo covered artists songs such as Alice Deejay, Faithless, Clean Bandit and of course their Daft Punk medley that I’d hear so much about. The Showhawk Duo finished the night with Bohemian Rhapsody, which definitely managed to get some audience members singing.

The duo don’t do vocals they leave that to the audience. Which was maybe somewhat lost on the Scunthorpe audience that night in comparison to some of the other gig videos i’d seen. Every song was familiar and easily recognisable. The crowd seemed to enjoy the show with a standing ovation and an encore. Overall it was great night of live music.

It just goes to show though that attending gigs of artists you might never otherwise have heard of can sometimes pay off and turn into a great night of live music.

The Michael White Live Lounge – Review and Thanks

MW5 MW1 MW2

On Saturday 12th April 2014 an evening of live music and entertainment was held at the Wortley House Hotel in the memory of Michael White to raise money for The Child of the Year Awards – a charity event that will be held in august. The evening was well organised by Vicky Barratt and Michael’s mum Tina Waring, and there was a fantastic turnout with 175 tickets sold. In total £948.28 was raised with £228 of this coming from a raffle on the evening (a proportion of the raffle money will be going to another of Vicky’s charities the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance.)

The evening began with Mr. Jonny Lavin taking the stage for a few songs, followed by another local singer/songwriter the lovely Sian Hart, and then a third in the shape of Mr. Matt Hercock. Next up Martin MorgaMW4n, (a man who embodies entertainment), made his showbiz entrance before he performed a few numbers in his own rather unique style. After this, as if by magic Jonny, Matt and Sian combined to become lively folk act Ramble Gamble, jollying up the room with a great mix of covers and their own songs whilst Martin hilariously vogued and frolicked about the dance-floor like a welsh Disco Stu. This man has his own Martin The Movie coming out would you believe. Keep an eye out for Ramble Gamble‘s soon to be forthcoming EP as well. Ollie Joe GriffithsMW6 from Wrawby was next. He had a fantastic voice and when requested to play his version of Mr Brightside, in the words of his fans, “He smashed It”. A beatbox act that has performed with Mary J Blige was next to take to the open floor, rather than the stage, Beatbox Drase & Babyface from Manchester. A talented pair who have just released their own single “Dutty” available to buy. Headlining the evening were Box Pavilion who rocked right from their opening with Dani California all the way to there last song Wonderwall, a song which had a special meaning to friends of Michael. All in all a very enjoyable evening that it was obvious a lot of effort had gone into. You could tell from the décor, the personal touches of sweets and goodies on the tables, to great line up of entertainment, that it meant a lot to the organisers that it was done right. And it was. Can’t wait for the next one.

A DVD/CD of the evening is available from vickymcnicoll@gmail.com for just £5. All sales will be added to the running total of funds already raised.

Very Special Thanks from Vicky and Tina go out to the following sponsors:-
