Last night we attended The Penny Bank on Scunthorpe High Street to listen to a talk given by Batemans Brewery owner, Stuart Bateman.

The Penny Bank is looking fresh with a recent refurbishment and quite a few people turned out for the talk.

Everyone interested in the meet with Stuart Bateman were seated in the back raised area. We couldn’t fit but we sat and listened in. Stuart explained the history of the company and how it has remained a family business for generations and he intends to keep it that way.

I am not a huge brewery or beer fanatic. I drink a few pints now and then but that’s about as far as my knowledge goes on the subject. So I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the talk and learnt some interesting facts about beer brewing, ingredients, the industry and processes.

The people in attendance for the talk were all very interested as Stuart passed around ingredients to taste and touch, such as chocolate malt used in stout and guinness and fresh hops to smell and feel.

The main purpose of the talk was to introduce and launch Batemans beer to the locals. The Penny Bank pub now has 3 Batemans beers on tap. I bought a round of Batemans and also got to try samples of the new additions. Both beers were light tasting and refreshing. You definitely got that citrus hit from the GOLD coming through.

Everyone that attended the talk also got the welcomed bonus of a free buffet afterwards.

If you haven’t popped in to the Penny Bank in a few months or even years then give it a go and support your local venues.
